How to Commission a Pet Portrait

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you commission a custom pet portrait?
Every pet portrait commission is a collaborative process that takes about two weeks from form submission to shipment.
  1. Browse the gallery to find a style that resonates.
  2. Submit your commission form with details about your pet, the portrait you envision, and 2–3 reference photographs.
  3. Receive your quote. Within one to two business days we’ll confirm your details and send a price quote with a payment link for a $50 non-refundable deposit. (Keep an eye on your spam folder.)
  4. We begin work. Once your deposit is received, we’ll create two original art concepts to choose from and deliver them within three business days, along with a payment link for the remaining balance.
  5. Review and select. Choose your preferred concept, proofread any text, and confirm your size and framing before giving final approval.
  6. Production and dispatch. Standard sizes are framed in-house and typically leave our studio within three business days. Please note that once an artwork is approved and payment is complete, the commission is final — no further changes or refunds can be accommodated.
What makes Studio Linnæus unique?
Every pet portrait commission is conceived as an original work of art — not a photo reproduction. Informed by three decades of working expertise in art history, animal anatomy, color, composition, light, and symbolism, each piece is precise, expressive, and emotionally resonant.
What photographs do you need?
Client photographs serve as reference only — no need to worry about background, grooming, or staging. We simply need a clear view of your pet’s distinguishing features: markings, coloring, and expression. Soft natural light is ideal; flash works well when light is limited. If possible, photograph at eye level, or place your pet on a chair or table.
Do you work with all animals?
Yes. Any living creature is a subject worthy of fine art.
Why do you ask for details such as breed or variety and birthday?
Each portrait is finished with a custom label on the verso bearing your pet’s details— making the work uniquely and permanently yours. Breed or variety details also allow us to approach each commission with the precision the subject deserves.
Can I include more than one pet?
Yes, though multi-pet compositions are available in our more foundational styles only. Please inquire before submitting. Each additional animal is $100, reflecting the care required to capture every likeness accurately.
Do you work from photographs of pets who have passed?
Yes. Memorial portraits are a significant part of our work.
Do you offer gift commissions?
Yes. Simply note this in your commission form and we’ll coordinate delivery details and, if needed, omit pricing from any included correspondence.
Do you use AI?
Yes, but sparingly — to generate raw material that remains inert until transformed by the artist. All creative decisions — style, composition, color, mood, symbolism, and finish — are entirely human.
What do commissions cost?
Commissions begin at $250 for an unframed 8×10″ archival print. Large-scale and architectural works are priced individually. Hand-painted oil commissions begin at $5,000. A full pricelist is available here.
Can I adjust size or framing after seeing my portrait?
Yes. Size and framing can be revisited after you’ve reviewed your concepts — before anything enters production.
How does the approval process work?
Every client receives two original concepts before anything is finalized. You select your preferred piece, which then proceeds to production.
Can I request changes to my concept?
Minor refinements are complimentary. Major revisions are $50.
What is your refund policy?
If you choose not to proceed after reviewing your art works, no further charge applies beyond the $50 deposit. Once an artwork is approved and enters production, we do not offer refunds or exchanges — except in the case of a manufacturing defect or damage in transit.
How long does a commission take?
From deposit to dispatch, the process typically takes two weeks. Large-scale and architectural commissions vary by scope. Hand-painted commissions carry a current waitlist of approximately six months.
Do you accept rush commissions?
Occasionally, depending on availability. Please note your timeline in the commission form and we will advise.
What paper do you print on?
All archival prints are produced on 300gsm cotton rag papers from Hahnemühle, Canson, or Moab — the same materials used by fine art printmakers worldwide. Every print is color-calibrated for tonal accuracy and dynamic range before production.
What framing options are available?
Our standard offering is presented in a signature mid-century modern frame, hand-crafted from premium U.S. walnut with rounded corners and nail-free joinery. Custom-sized prints can be shipped unframed directly to your local framer.
How should I care for my print?
Archival inkjet prints are highly durable when displayed and stored correctly. Avoid direct sunlight and high humidity. UV-protective glazing is recommended to preserve color fidelity over time. Unframed prints should be stored flat, interleaved with acid-free tissue.
Where do you ship?
Worldwide. Shipping is complimentary within the United States.
What sizes are available?
We print at any size up to 80×120 inches on a variety of materials, including wallpaper. Size recommendations based on your space can be discussed during the commission process.
How are works shipped?
Unframed prints are shipped rolled in a protective tube. Framed works are dispatched with protective corner guards. All shipments include insurance.
